Is Spiced Rum Really a Rum?

Spiced rum starts life as real rum — the difference comes from the spices, sweetness, and flavourings added afterwards. What counts as rum, and why the category ranges from craft to dessert.

Spiced rum starts life as real rum. The difference comes from what happens after distillation — the spices, sweetness, and flavourings blended in before bottling.

The Short Answer

Yes, spiced rum is rum. The base spirit is distilled from sugarcane in exactly the same way as any other rum. The category name simply tells you extra ingredients have been added.

What Producers Add

Whole spices like vanilla, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, ginger, and allspice. Citrus peel and botanicals. Sweeteners such as sugar syrup, molasses, or honey. And, at the mass-market end, natural and artificial flavourings designed to hit a consistent flavour target every batch.

Craft vs Mass-Market

At one end you have craft spiced rums built on real rum with whole spices macerated for weeks. At the other, heavily flavoured bottles closer to a rum-based liqueur than a spirit. Both call themselves "spiced rum" on the label — reading the ingredients (and the sugar content, where it's disclosed) tells you which one you're buying.

Is It "Real" Rum?

Legally and technically, yes. Whether it tastes like the rum *you* want to drink is a different question — and one this site exists to help you answer.
